French Onion Soup

French onion soup made with Bisto

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cooking Time: 20 mins
Serves: 10
Serving Size: Approx 350g

  • 65g Butter
  • 1500g Onions finely sliced
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, finely chopped
  • 25g Flour, white or wholemeal
  • 2000ml Boiling Water
  • 40g Bisto Beef Bouillon Paste
  • 1Q Black pepper

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the onions and sweat off with a lid on until the onions are dark golden brown. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes to soften
  2. Stir in the flour and cook over a gentle heat, browning slightly
  3. Mix the bouillon paste with the boiling water and gradually add to the onions. Simmer for 20 minutes, until the onions are soft and correct the seasoning with black pepper.
  4. Serve with a slice of French bread, topped with cheese and grilled. This is sometimes known as a flute or croute

Additional Tips

The more you darken your onions, the deeper the flavour will be. Adding a little tomato puree to the soup will give a little sweetness and a rounded flavour to the dish.
